Sumner's Tales: Sting talks...

"It starts as just a folk ballad, with just me playing the guitar and singing in unison, and that goes into a kind of Brazilian vibe. It's really about nature and accepting nature as not only a metaphor for your own life but as something miraculous in itself. I'm much closer to nature now than I ever was - I hug trees, I speak to the grass. It helps."
'Mercury Falling' Promotional Interview Disc, '96

"I've come to the realisation through experiences that not only is nature an amazing metaphor for human relationships and patterns of behaviour - it's a miracle in it's own right. You can't separate us from the trees, we're part of the same carbon based family of life. If you see nature as something apart from you, you have no respect for it."
'Mercury Falling' Tour Progam '96

'I Was Brought To My Senses' appeared on 1996's Mercury Falling album and was released as the third single in just missing the top 30 spot. Notable for it's terrific lyric, the song featured throughout the subsequent world tour. At the time of 1996's 'Mercury Falling' album, something strange happened. After a pattern of releasing singles that were accompanied by bonus tracks of live material or disappointing remixes during 1991-1995, we were suddenly treated to some new songs such as 'The Pirate's Bride' (included on the 'I Was Brought To My Senses' single) and 'Beneath A Desert Moon' (included on the 'You Still Touch Me' single). Whilst that in itself might not be strange, these two songs are both superb and because they were relegated to being bonus tracks on singles that didn't sell very well, are considered 'lost classics' amongst many fans.
